Thanks, guys! For REVELATIONS OF ZANG, I worked with the artist (Josh Finney) directly. So I was able to have much more input on this cover than on my novels. For Orbit I simply provided them a detailed written description of my cover idea, then the editor, the art director, and the artist collaborated to create those great covers. Orbit made a great choice when they picked Rich Anderson to do the BOOKS OF THE SHAPER books.

+1 for Khlit
I often wonder whether Pratchett's Cohen the Barbarian was inspired by Khlit.

John Carter of Mars also comes to mind.

One of my very favorite heroes is Corwin of Amber. Flawed, cocky, even a little bit evil, you can't help but root for him anyway. He's superhuman, but completely human, and somehow warm despite his... issues.

And Khlit the Cossack, from Harold Lamb's saga, is pretty unique. He lives by the sword, but as he's aged, has had to rely more and more on his hard-won wisdom, for he does not have the same kind of endurance he used to have.

I actually agree with you. I mean... If you look at Beowulf, there are verses uncounted that describe him as perfect, strong, wise, etc. It's almost as if humanity needed these huge, flawless characters to battle these moody gods, like you see in the Greek and Roman tradition. Granted, the Saxons really prized glory in battle, but... I could go on and on about that. Anyways, nice article.
